It’s summer, and we’re 100% over hair that’s here, there and everywhere. We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but high heat and crazy humidity is not your hairdo’s BFF. It’s time to put heat styling on pause (bye-bye, blowouts) and embrace the softer side of summer. And to help us do that, we’ve rounded up a bevy of celebrity stylists and asked each to share their never-fail “keep cool and carry on” recommendations for flawless summer hair.
Motions Celebrity Hairstylist Ursula Stephen, who has worked with Rihanna, Mary J. Blige, and Kerry Washington, adds, “The summer is a great time to experiment with loose, carefree, heat free braids, waves, and tension-free updos.”
TRY THIS: I CAN SEE YOUR HALO
Try a boho-inspired halo braid. Comb hair down from crown to the front of head. Start at back nape area and begin cornrowing. Follow the circumference of head until you finish. Tuck the end of the braid into the beginning point with a bobby pin to secure. Pull out a few pieces of hair around the face. For a day-long hold, spray Motions Light Hold Working Spritz ($3) as you braid and after to the finished style.
Look cool and feel cool with a simple, yet sexy updo. Color Wow Brand Ambassador and John Frieda Senior Stylist Giles Robinson adds, “As temperatures rise, the most obvious thing to do with your hair is put it up. But if you want to look modern, give your updo a little funk factor.”
TRY THIS: UPDO FUNK GONNA GIVE IT TO YOU
First, rough dry your hair using just fingers, no brush. Put your hair in a high ponytail, near the crown of your head. Twist hair in a clockwise motion until it forms a knot. Clip or pin hair in place so that the ends stick up over the crown. Throw a roller in the front/top section of hair, right above your forehead, and then let the pieces fall. This will create movement and complete this understated look. Apply a styling cream like Color Wow One Minute Transformation ($24) to any frizzy areas. For a super shiny finish, apply a coin size amount of Color Wow Pop & Lock Shellac over your ponytail ($18).
Think air-dried hair can’t look professional? Think again. Ricky Pennisi, founder of RI CI, wants women to know that curly hair is fierce and perfectly workplace-appropriate. Ricky shares one of his favorite looks:
TRY THIS: PONY UP (HALF WAY)
Starting at the temple, gather the front half of your naturally air-dried hair and secure with an elastic at the top center of your head. To hide the elastic, wrap a small strand of your hair around it and secure with a bobby pin. Let the back half fall loosely and naturally. Lock the look into place with the RI CI Memory Setting Spray ($15). The half pony strikes a perfect balance: It’s carefree, yet polished.
So there you have it! The complete scoop on keeping your ‘do cool and flawless all summer long. Good luck!
