In the design world, few names are synonymous with such terms as over-the-top, fantastical, and costume-meets-couture. Unless, of course, you’re The Blonds. These type of comparisons are an everyday occurrence.
Known mostly as a glamorous force of nature, the brainchild of Phillipe and David Blond, The Blonds has quickly become a widely acclaimed label that creates show-stopping pieces for Beyoncé, Lady GaGa, Katy Perry, Nikki Minaj, Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, and many more fashionable ladies. The design duo launched their line in 2008, featuring heavily embellished bodysuits and skin-tight ensembles drenched in sequins, spikes, chains, and a myriad of dazzling trims. Their designs have garnered international fashion awards as well as fashion and beauty campaigns. They have outfitted top models and, most recently, primetime television personality Cookie Lyon.
We sat down with the powerful pair to hear what it’s like to be at the center of the pop culture universe and touted as the industry’s go-to designers.
The Lady Loves Couture: What is it like to be part of a duo? How do you negotiate a shared creative process?
The Blonds: At this point, it is very smooth and, as they say, two heads are better than one! Occasionally we will have creative differences, but we figure out a way to work what we both want into every piece.
TLLC: What are your pet peeves in fashion? And what do you love the most about the work you do?
TB: We love our clients the most! And also seeing the looks we create come to life. The only pet peeve is the demand for everyone to look the same. Even though fashion is becoming more diverse, it is still based on trend.
TLLC: When did you realize that your designs were taking off?
TB: Beyonce was the first celebrity to wear our pieces and it all seemed to click! Our passion for music is equal to our passion to create, so when those two worlds collided, it was mind blowing!
TLLC: How would you want people to feel or think when they see or wear your clothes?
TLLC: Who or what do you draw inspiration from?
TB: Women, music, film, animation, etc!
TLLC: Who would you like to dress that you haven’t and what would you want them to wear?
TB: We recently dressed Taraji P. Henson as Cookie on Empire, and it was phenomenal! We are also huge film buffs. We’d love to extend into doing special occasions and red carpet as well. We have an endless respect for these artists because they use themselves as their medium. So it would be incredible to dress Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman, or Penelope Cruz. We could go on forever!
TLLC: If you weren’t designing, what other profession would you be in?
TB: We would raise and breed Chinese Cresteds.
TLLC: How have your aesthetic sensibilities evolved from when you began designing to present day?
TB: First and foremost, we have no limits! We never try to reign ourselves in at the start of a project because that interrupts the flow. Editing happens organically and we don’t force it, however we’ve definitely evolved into a more focused aesthetic.
